The Leonna Legacy Scholarship
In loving memory of Leonna Dalton - Phillip
Leonna R. Dalton-Phillip was born to Jalisa Dalton and Claude Phillip on November 29, 1999 in Omaha, NE. She was their pride and joy and the oldest of both her mom and dad’s children. Leonna attended skinner Magnet School, Picotte Elementary School, and then Alice Buffett Magnet Middle School, where she started to excel in her academics. While at Buffett, she was in the Scholars Program and received an AWESOME Award in seventh and eighth grade.
Leonna attended Burke High Schoool and maintained a 4.0 GPA. She was a member of Burke’s Marching Bulldogs drill team and climbed her way to captain. Her teammates quickly became her second family. They loved her as much as she loved them. Leonna also took AP courses in preparation for her college career. Leonna was also a part of Creighton’s Upper Bound program. When she was a sophomore, Leonna won the “Heroes” writing contest for her grade level. Her hero was Harriet Tubman. Leonna was a very gifted writer. She also worked as a cashier at Target where she quickly gained the admiration of her coworkers. Her spirit of excellence in academics and involvement provided her with multiple college scholarships.
Leonna loved to dance and often spent time creating new steps to perform. Her smile always lit up a room and her laugh was contagious and unforgettable. Leonna had a caring, helpful personality and often took the time to help her peers in school. Although she was heavily involved in extracurricular activities, work, and scholarship, she always made time for her younger brother and sister. Much of her leadership was developed through the responsibility she showed in the pride she took in being a big sister and the bonds she built with her little ones. She also enjoyed going to amusement parks and watching movies.
Upon graduation Leonna had plans to attend Lincoln University of Missouri to study Forensic Science and then following her dreams to California to become an actress. Although she is no longer with us in the physical her Legacy of contagious enthusiasm, leadership, and excellence will live on.
